Technical Design Specifications: Mariculture Demonstration Facility
The development objective of the Promoting Community-based Climate Resilience in the Fisheries Sector Project for Jamaica intends to assist National Fisheries Authority of the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries (MAF) in realising the aquaculture potentials of Jamaica. The AquaBioTech Group has been contracted to assist in the development of a climate smart/climate resilient mariculture demonstration facility at the Fisheries Division’s Bowden Mariculture Facility through a design that was presented to the MAF.
Project Targets
The development objective of the Promoting Community-based Climate Resilience in the Fisheries Sector Project for Jamaica is to increase the adoption of climate resilient practices among targeted fishing and fish farming communities in Jamaica.
The project aims to achieve the following components:

These technical design specifications are developed for the mariculture demonstration facility at the National Fisheries Authority’s Bowden Mariculture Facility. The design is based on the results of the site evaluation, the literature review, and stakeholder’s consultations. Due to COVID-19, no site visit was conducted, however, information, data and photos of the site were gathered by NFA and shared with the consultants which was used to evaluate the site. The design also takes into account financial feasibility, sustainability, and adaptation to climate change. Since this is a demonstration facility, the design caters to easy workflows for staff as well as room for visitors and trainees.
The demonstration Mariculture facility consist of a hatchery (including broodstock), nursery in land-based tanks and grow-out in ponds (fish) and on rafts/pens (oysters/seaweeds/sea cucumbers), live feed culture rooms, a laboratory and a training room. A separate room for hatching of oysters is included. The oyster hatchery is designed with the same dimensions as the training room and the training room can be placed as a second level on top of the oyster
hatchery.
